As I continue to look into all the amazing qualities of the Hawaiian islands, I paused to consider the coconut.
The Coconut, coco nucifera, has become the center stage for a myriad of uses in today’s world.
My daughter started having some health issues recently due to a broken vertebrae from performing in gymnastics. I became the vigilant father and started pumping her with coconut water after hearing of its high mineral content and healthy qualities. The more I immersed myself in the coconut world, the more I was impressed.
The use of the coconut through history and its critical role in transporting of water, food and even fuel is unparalleled. It’s also being used as a new bio-diesel fuel in some parts of Asia.
Here at our house on Kauai at any given time we have 10 to 20 coconuts waiting in the garage. We share the fresh coconut water, then split the nut in two and share the meat inside. Oh the clean living on Kauai. Call me or come by and I’m happy to share.
I was told that the Portuguese were the first to discover the coconut floating out at sea. Marco Polo wrote of them and they were included in the “Chronicles of Alexandria” written in 650 BC.
Coconuts are one of the top 10 most talked about foods in the world right now.
